I got my start in home contracting about 36 years ago, around 1990. But the foundation was laid even earlier.
When I was 13, I ran a newspaper route—morning and afternoon—every day.
At the same time, I was picking up contracting skills by helping a family member who owned a small contracting business whenever he needed an extra set of hands.
Balancing both meant one thing: I had to show up. Every morning. Every afternoon. No excuses.
That routine taught me something early—being on time, being reliable, and being there when people count on you matters just as much as skill. Those habits followed me through school, into graduation, and straight into the work that shaped my career.
I was always showing up on time, doing the work, and seeing it through became second nature early on. Alot of contractors do not have the skill to finish and know how its supposed to look. It is those who worked for a ligament contractor and broke off to form their own company, thinking they are now equip to complete a project on time and done right. This runs rampant in our industry. To them its about money.
Not long after that, I was working rough-in houses, hard core construction—in the winter. It wasn’t glamorous, but it taught me discipline, consistency, and how to stick with a job no matter the conditions. Being exposed to so many parts of the trade early on turned me into what people call a “jack of all trades,” which gave me a solid foundation.
Still, it didn’t take long to realize where my real passion was—painting. That’s when I decided to start my first company.
When I launched K.B. Home Contracting, life was busy—really busy. I was juggling three jobs while starting a family all at the same time. It wasn’t easy, but staying focused and committed paid off. Over the years, my hands-on experience across multiple trades helped me understand how every part of a home works together, whether it’s a small repair or a large project.
Through the years I’ve worked alongside individual painters, large companies, unions, and also on my own. Seeing the industry from every angle taught me what truly lasts—and what doesn’t. I’ve learned which methods hold up, which products perform over time, and what it takes to deliver a clean, high-quality finish without cutting corners.
